Nessebar vs. Sozopol: Choosing between historic charm and modern holiday apartments

I am planning a trip to the Bulgarian Black Sea coast and I am torn between staying in the historic old towns of Nessebar or Sozopol. I love the idea of wandering through ancient cobblestone streets, but I am also concerned about whether I will find comfortable, modern apartment rentals with good amenities in those areas. Conversely, are the nearby modern holiday complexes better for convenience, or do they lack the authentic atmosphere I am looking for? Any advice from those who have visited both would be greatly appreciated.

I've stayed in both, and honestly, the Old Town in Sozopol feels a bit more lived-in, while Nessebar is very tourist-focused. You can find modern apartments in renovated houses in both, but if you're looking to buy or invest, make sure you check out Act 16 status before committing.

Nessebar is stunning because it's on a peninsula, but it gets incredibly crowded in July and August. If you want comfort, look for boutique guesthouses rather than large complexes; they offer the best of both worlds.

Sozopol has a better 'vibe' for evening strolls. The modern complexes nearby are definitely more convenient if you have kids, but you lose that magical feeling of waking up in a centuries-old building.

I found that Nessebar has more high-end rental apartments, but they are often right in the middle of the tourist chaos. If you're sensitive to noise, definitely look for something on the quieter side of the peninsula.

If you choose a modern apartment in a complex, you'll get a pool and parking, which is a nightmare in the historic centers. Just ensure the property paperwork is solid—if you're buying, definitely look for legal advice first.

Sozopol is my favorite. The old town has such character. We rented a modern apartment in a restored house and it had everything we needed—AC, fast Wi-Fi, and a great view of the sea.
